The IIHS Highway Safety Institute has tested small cars for safety in side impacts. The testing agency ruled that the midsize pickup category performed better than the other groups. According to the latest tests, five of the six models tested were rated "good" or "acceptable", and one received a "satisfactory" rating.

Of the pickups that participated in the testing, the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and Honda Ridgeline with Crew Cab cabs were at the top of the rating. The Nissan Frontier and Ford Ranger (previous generation) received acceptable scores, while the Toyota Tacoma (also previous generation) received a satisfactory score.

IIHS Senior Research Engineer Becky Mueller praised the segment's performance and explained why pickups perform so well. The vehicle's ride height helps reduce collision damage. Also, the rugged construction and roll cage reduce the risk of most injuries.
