Like previous 4Runner models, the new model shares many similarities with the Tacoma midsize pickup, including its engine. Toyota's 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be available on all sixth-generation 4Runner trims. The standard i-Force version delivers 278 hp. and torque 429 Nm. The i-Force Max Hybrid also features an electric motor and a 1.87 kWh battery for a total of 326 hp. and 630 Nm of torque. Towing capacity increases from 2267 kg to 2721 kg.
The wheelbase of the new model has increased by 6 cm, and the overall length has increased by 12 cm compared to the previous model. Longer overhangs mean approach and departure angles for the new 4Runner are slightly reduced to 32 and 24 degrees, respectively, compared to 33 and 26 degrees for the fifth-generation all-wheel drive. However, the wheelbase, which is shorter by almost 51 cm compared to the Tacoma, should give the 4Runner a big advantage over the pickup truck in terms of breakover angle.
Both variants are equipped with the same eight-speed automatic transmission found in the Tacoma and Land Cruiser. As before, customers can choose rear-wheel drive, part-time or permanent all-wheel drive. Both all-wheel drive systems feature a two-speed transfer case and Toyota's Active Traction Control system, which helps transfer torque to the wheels as efficiently as possible. All variants are equipped with an automatic limited slip differential.
TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and the new Trailhunter trim also feature an electronic locking rear differential. The Platinum trim level includes a locking center differential, and it's also available as an option on the Limited. New to the 4Runner is the ability to disable the anti-roll bar, which comes in handy when off-road.
The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter includes 2.5-inch ARB Old Man Emu shock absorbers with remote reservoirs on the rear axle and a custom ARB roof rack. 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires, as well as increased ground clearance of 5 cm in the front and 3.8 cm in the rear, will help you off-road. The Trailhunter comes standard with rock-rails and high-strength steel skid plates, as well as a bronze grille and a built-in 20-inch LED light bar. Toyota has also built in a 2400W generator to power equipment while traveling.
The new 2025 Toyota 4Runner will go on sale in the fall of 2024.
