The 2022 Ford Maverick is a new compact pickup that comes standard with a hybrid powertrain and front-wheel drive, and Ford claims it spends up to 40 MPG in the city.

A turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is also available, which offers all-wheel drive as an option. It can tow up to 4000 lbs.

The Maverick will go on sale this fall in XL, XLT and Lariat models starting at $21,490.

Ford is returning to the compact pickup market with the new Maverick, hoping that the new model will attract sedan buyers after the automaker dropped passenger cars from its lineup. The Maverick pickup will go on sale next year and will be positioned under the mid-size Ranger pickup in Ford's lineup and will come standard with a hybrid powertrain starting at $21,490.

The five-passenger four-door Maverick fits in with other one-piece pickups such as the upcoming Hyundai Santa Cruz and the Honda Ridgeline. It is smaller than the current Ranger, but is close in size to the second generation model. It is 4.5 feet long (the Ridgeline has 5.3 feet) and can carry up to 1,500 pounds with both drivetrain options. The cargo area is six feet when the tailgate is lowered. Inside the bed there are two pre-wired 12V power supplies, 110 and 400W sockets available, four attachment points, four D-rings and threaded holes on the side of the body for custom concept bolts. Scan the QR code in the back and it will give you ideas for updates, such as bike mounts.

All Mavericks get an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. There are many niches inside, including storages under the rear seats, for items like large water bottles and telephones. Ford used a floating armrest for the door panels to provide more room for items. Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and Android capabilities are standard for everyone. The base and mid-range models have hand-adjustable fabric seats, but the upper Lariat is upgraded to adjustable faux leather seats. Sticking to the standard hybrid means slightly less legroom in the second row; both configurations have less rear seat space than the Escape.

The 2022 Ford Maverick is available to order in XL, XLT and Lariat models. It will arrive this fall starting at $21,490 for the base XL, $23,775 for the XLT and $26,985 for the Lariat.
