Toyota's upcoming full-size pickup truck comes with lots of updated equipment. The current generation Toyota Tundra made its official sales debut back in January 2007. Although the truck went through a fairly extensive redesign in 2014, the aging pickup has long required a proper upgrade. Fortunately for buyers, the 2022 model year promises to bring a new Tundra. That's all we know about the upcoming 2022 Tundra.
NEW PLATFORM
As Automotive News reported in April 2019, all future Toyota pickups will rely on a common platform. This frame platform, known as the TNGA-F, is currently used in the new Toyota Land Cruiser. Thanks to the use of heavy-duty steel and other advanced materials, the new Tundra will be stiffer and safer than its predecessor. MotorTrend also notes that the 2022 Tundra will likely use coil-spring rear suspension along with a new platform. Such a redesign should not only improve ride quality, but also reduce the payload and towing capabilities of the current Tundra.
NEW LOOK
After some leaked images of the 2022 Tundra TRD Pro hit the internet, the Japanese automaker has a high-quality image of the truck. While we only have one shot, it is clear that the new Tundra styling is in line with current trends. The front panel is dominated by a new grille design that features an integrated LED panel on the TRD Pro model. The front bumper is integrated with the large radiator grille and is complemented by a unique texture. The same texture can be found on the car's fenders, which are positioned above the unique new set of wheels. Those wheels will be shod with 33-inch Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, according to Toyota's own teaser. Based on the integrated amber position lights in the nose of the truck, a width of over 80 inches can be expected, a first for a model.
IMPROVED INTERIOR
Toyota has also shared images that give us an idea of what we can expect from the new Tundra interior. These images seem to highlight the TRD Pro once again, as evidenced by the red stripe on the leather-covered steering wheel. The interior features a much larger infotainment screen than the current 8.0-inch device, which displays Apple Car Play functionality in a teaser. Expect Android Auto to be around too. The car and driver indicated that a hidden JBL audio system can also be seen in the image. Most recently, Toyota confirmed that the 2022 Tundra will be sold with a panoramic sunroof as well as a fully opening electric rear window. Together, these two elements should mimic the outdoor driving experience reasonably well.
TWIN TURBO ENGINE
According to Car and Driver, the 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro will use a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine. A version of this engine is used in the Land Cruiser, where it produces 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. A hybrid variant of this powertrain is also expected to be available, as hinted at by the iForce Max engine cover. MotorTrend also believes entry-level models could get a naturally aspirated version of the 3.5-liter V-6 engine.
PRICING
The current Toyota Tundra starts at $34,025. However, a slight price hike is expected to keep the Tundra on par with Ford and Ram offerings.
RELEASE DATE
Toyota will be waiting for the image of the new Tundra, it is clear that it will not take long to wait all the time. The new automaker itself notes on its own Tundra website that the car will arrive this fall, in line with its 2022 model year debut sales. We expect that more detailed information about the truck will not remain secret until the release.
